5.4 Comparing the Dakotas.

Big Idea:
South Dakota and North Dakota rank 45 and 47 in population of all the states in the United States. South Dakota has 721,000 people in 75,896 square miles of land and North Dakota has 638,000 people in 68,994 square miles of land.

Notes:
Population density is unit rates that tell us the average number of people in a given unit area.
EG:
10 million people = X people
25 mi2 1mi2

Question 2) 1. Find your target rate. (average population density)
2. Use the target rate to calculate your answere with labelled information in a proportion

Problem 5.4:
A) Which state North Dakota or South Dakota, has a greater population desity?
South Dakota: 721,000 / 75,896 = 9.5 people/sq mi rounded = 9.5 people/sq mi
North Dakota: 638,000 / 68,994 = 9.24 people/sq mi rounded = 9.25 people/sq mi
South Dakota has the greatest population desity.

B) How many citizens would have to move to the other state to make the population densities in the two states equal? Explain how you arrived to your answere.

South Dakota: 721,000 / 75,896 = 9.49
North Dakota: 638,000 / 68,994 = 9.24 rounded = 9.25
Average Population Desity: 9.25 + 9.49 = 18.75
18.75 / 2 = 9.375 rounded = 9.38
X / Y = 9.375
(Y = 68,994)
X / 68,994 = 9.375
X = 9.375 * 68,994 = 646,818.75 rounded = 646,819.

646,819 - 638,000 = 8819

8819 people would have to move from South Dakota to North Dakota to make the Population Densities equal.
  • I found my answere by first finding the population desities of the two states, then using that information to find the average population desity, which were 9.38.. Then i turned my numbers into algebra. Since i already knew the value of X i could easily ind the value of Y by timing the numer on the right side og the equation mark by the number on the left side. Then i subtracted that number from the total number of people that i started with and i got 8819 people.

FOLLOW UP) Find the population desity of your state. How does it compare to the population densities of North and Sounth Dakota?

People in Bangladesh: 160,000,000
Square Miles: 56,977
160,000,000 / 56,977 = 2,808.15 people/sq mi rounded 2,808 people/sq mi
